3 things about Inferno 2016 movie costumes

I spent an interesting Wednesday evening at the movie theater with one of the freshest movies on Romanian big screens – ‘Inferno‘, created after Dan Brown’s epic bestseller. I admit from the beginning that conspirations – no matter what type – are not exactly my cup of tea, yet I was interested enough in seeing the big screen adaptation of a book I’ve read with curiosity a few years back.

Iti marturisesc, eu am avut dintotdeauna o slabiciune pentru arta si cultura veche. Mama mea mi-a insuflat aceste preocupari si ii multumesc tare mult pentru asta. Mami, daca citesti asta, fii mandra!

I am confessing to you, I always had a thing for ancient art & culture. My mother gave me this sense for beauty and I warmly thank her for this. Mum, if you read this, please be proud! So I was spending these rainy Sundays holding colorful encyclopedias in my hands, discovering within their pages lots of stunning buildings and palaces, ancient stories, fascinating masterworks and a lot of ancient scent of times gone from such a long time. Strong desires were occurring in my mind: going to those places, seeing, feeling the old history, enjoying the unicity of the landscapes and imagining the type of existence lead by the inhabitants.

Cu o actiune trepidanta, pe urmele versurilor enigmatice lasate mostenire umanitatii de catre Dante Alighieri, filmul te poarta prin adevarate leagane ale istoriei, frumosului si culturii vechi: Florenta (Palazzo Vecchio, Gradinile Boboli), Venetia (Piazza San Marco, Palazzo Ducale, Basilica di San Marco), Istanbul (Hagia Sophia). Nu am facut decat sa ma bucur de frumosul periplu, imaginandu-mi momentele cand eu insami voi pasi pe acele stradute si pardoseli.

With a thrilling action, on the path of enigmatic lyrics that humanity inherited from Dante Alighieri, the movie leads you among true cradles of history, beauty and old culture: Florence (with Palazzo Vecchio and Boboli Gardens), Venice (with Piazza San Marco, Palazzo Ducale, Basilica di San Marco), Istanbul (with its Hagia Sophia). All I did was enjoying this great periplus, picturing the very moments I will step myself on those streets and pavements.

Instinctively I paid attention to the costumes designed for the movie making (I know, yes, I have no rest!). I joyfully found in these the below:

1. The beauty

2. The classical

3. The inspirational.

I perceived them as very well adapted to central ideas of atemporal, incontestable & classical. I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, harsh or eclectical. The characters are part of that walk of life for which every detail matters and can make a difference in almost all situations. Their costumes (imagined by Julian Day) may appear as dull and lacking expressiveness, but I think it gives you a clear message about the importance of the stakes they are involved in. Professor Robert Langdon wears a sober suit, uncharacteristic to his daily style (it’s also a conclusion often expressed by other characters during the movie!). His partner Sienna Brooks is wandering through the places I told you about wearing a timeless composition: a bleumarine trench, classic black jeans, black wedge shoes, as well as an invincible silk white shirt. The accessories she wears are minimal (a pendant necklace and a watch). Less, better.

Relativ.

The same sobriety of business suits can be again found in other characters’ clothing. Those are being entrusted high level of responsibility jobs for which dignified app and getting respect are day-to-day requirements. Is there any other more effective solution to meet this criteria than the classical business suit which also has to be a perfect fit? Relatively, I’d say.

Long story short, the movie was a delight for my senses of hearing and seeing. I enjoyed the music, the action, the great places and the costumes and – if you would like to find out more – I warmly recommend you to spend a little of your time in front of the big screen.
